November is a month with a special focus on giving thanks. This month my wife has been encouraging us to create a list of things we are thankful for every day. So, what are you thankful for?
As it relates to homeschooling, we are all, no doubt, very thankful for our freedom to disciple and educate our children at home without government interference. Our homeschool freedom here in Michigan is a result of God’s grace working in people and through people, both Christians and non-Christians, though most involved in the battle were dedicated servants of the Lord. Back in the 80’s and 90’s, MiCHN (then known as INCH) and HSLDA (Home School Legal Defense Association) were inseparable partners with God in procuring our freedom to homeschool here– for which we are now so thankful!
Much of what we have and give thanks for is the result of someone else giving: God gave His Son. Soldiers gave their lives. Our moms and wives gave of themselves by laboring painfully to bring us and our beloved children into the world. Our fathers and husbands gave of themselves by working long hours to provide for us. Families, attorneys, and elected officials gave of their time and money to obtain our homeschool freedom in the courts and in the legislature.
Giving is the precursor to thanks-giving. Giving causes thanksgiving. We are certainly thankful when others give to us. And those who are mature know the thanksgiving that occurs in our hearts when we ourselves are able to serve, help, and give to others. When God uses our time, talent, and treasure to bless others, we are thankful and grateful that He gives us these opportunities to be a part of His work- causing others to be thankful, as well.
We are thankful for each of you and your support of the work of MICHN- helping Michigan homeschoolers pass on the faith, promote the family, and preserve our freedom. Here’s hoping you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving, remembering those who have given so much to you- including and most especially, how much the Lord has given us! “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:15
