Many Michigan families are feeling unsure about sending their children back to the classroom this fall. This past year, every family in Michigan experienced an unusual and unplanned school year. Moms and dads were called upon to figure out how to give their children not only a good academic education, but also how to keep them feeling safe and secure. Veteran homeschooling families and new homeschooling families all felt the uncertainty of life. We didn’t know from day to day, and week to week, what exactly would be allowed for ourselves and our children. Those who had sent their children away to public and private school in the past, were now having them at home all day and needing to help them with their lessons. This unexpected change in our lives, turned everyone’s routines upside down. Now, a new school year is upon us, and we are still unsure of what tomorrow will look like.
These uncertain times, have made many families consider homeschooling this coming year. Some families want to keep their children home, but don’t want to do public school at home, because it just wasn’t a fit for them last year. Some families have never considered homeschooling, and have no idea how to get started. Others are returning to homeschooling, and wondering if the rules are still the same.
We here at MICHN are here to help. Homeschooling your children should be a privilege and joy. The good news is here in Michigan the requirements are very minimal. Here is a short video from HSLDA, Homeschool Legal Defense. This video explains that as a parent in Michigan you have the right to homeschool your children, and you do not have to report to your local school if you so choose. You also have the privilege to even design and plan how and when you educate your children. You need only to make a comprehensive plan and take action.
If you have decided to take your child out of public school, we have a letter that you can use to let your school administration know you are not returning this fall. Use the link below and get started on your homeschool journey.
Now, you are ready to start making your homeschool education plan. Here is an article written by Ginny Yurich, homeschooling mom of five.
